Carpool for events

I want to get folks to events this year and I have use of a "big-ass" van to help. It is a 12 passenger van for a group that packs light and a 9 passenger van when you need to pack heavy. There is a roof rack for gear with canvas bag to keep small items from blowing around and a trailer hitch if we need to tow something, through gas costs might go up a bit in that case.

If there is interest in doing such things I'll start taking reservations soon :)

Estimated gas costs per person...

Also 12 people going to Santa

Also 12 people going to Santa Fe from Albuquerque would be like $2 a person round trip. 8+ people is $3.

I'm using the high end of current gas prices in the area so a trip to Texas would likely be a little bit cheaper.

Spring War

How many people do you have signed up for Spring War so far?

lurker's picture

!

Pretty much only people who have posted here.

Glenalth's picture

Negotiations

I'm still trying to determine if we can hit Spring War. My parents would rather we do a smaller trip first to make sure there are no issues. That pretty much means a trip to Las Cruces or other nearby group to begin with.

Only 52 days 'til Spring War. I'm somewhat annoyed by the $25 gate fee there though.

Well, if we were to hit Spring War then, that means that we would need to make the smaller trip in the next 6 weeks or so.

Glenalth's picture

Yeah

Or even sooner since most people need a while to get time off for a long event like Spring War.

Also

"big-ass van" and "big ass-van" are entirely different things.

Dragonspine meets on Saturdays, right? That pretty much leaves next Saturday, February 14th, February 28th, and March 14th as possible DS visit days. Next Saturday is iffy because it's "short notice", the 14th is iffy because it's a BoD meeting, and March 14th is iffy because it's so close to Spring War.

So I'd say next week and February 28th look like the best times to plan a DS trip, but it doesn't look so promising either way.

On the other hand, it would be easier to take a Sunday trip to Santa Fe, but it would be a lot harder to motivate people to go.

Santa Fe

Maybe the Sunday after crown qualifications?

A raid on Lost Souls in two weeks? Sounds doable.

I'll get the ballista ready :)

I'll have to see if the van is available that weekend. Probably won't know until Wednesday or Thursday.

Issues

What issues regarding the bus? When was the last time it had work done on it? Does it need some sort of maintenance? If so how much are we talking here? When was the last time it was driven anywhere? If it's sat for a long time then it may need it's belts and perhaps some hoses replaced.

lurker's picture

!

They pretty much just bought it. It's old, but the previous owners maintained it pretty well.

Glenalth just drove it into town this last weekend. Works fine. The "smaller trip" idea is to prevent accidental Orders of the Hellrider because of "secret problems" that nobody knows about.

Marcil Firestalker Woodsman's picture

I may not actually be able to

I may not actually be able to afford the trips anywhere...Turns out my financial aid got screwed over, we'll see what happens.

Glenalth's picture

...

It's not the bus, it's a passenger van. Besides needing work done, the bus has other issues like lower gas mileage while having seating for less people than the van.

Seating and available space

Seating and available space are two very different things, yes the van has seating for 13? but I managed to fill my back seat and trunk with stuff for clan, if everyone packed heavily you'd be lucky to fit 5 people in the fan. If you can pile stuff on the roof easily without it flying away then you could probably fit a few more. At very least each person will have a few weapons/shield, tent, food/drinks, and a bag of some kind for clothing/bedding/toiletries. I personally wouldn't put a cooler of drinks on top of the van, nor my weapon/shield unless there was some type of weather protection minimally a very well secured tarp.

Riff Raff's picture

Hmmm, might we be able to see

Hmmm, might we be able to see a picture of the van in question? It would give people a better idea of the kind of room we are talking about.

Glenalth's picture

Van

No photos at the moment, but it looks a lot like this but with a roof rack.

Dodge Prospector
2 captain's chairs up front.
2 rows of 3 person seating.
1 row of 4 person seating.
1 elevated roof rack.
1 rear ladder for loading rack.
1 nylon roof bag that sits in front of rack.

Marcil Firestalker Woodsman's picture

You could totally only fit

You could totally fit like 6-8 people in that...As much as the Christ Mobile can hold. The Christ Mobile brought 4 people to and from Clan with room for 1 more person on the way down...and only room for 2 people total on the way back(We had to leave without packing...just through everything in there cause of the flood.)

The Christ Mobile has transported 7 people to HW at once, but I had to lay with my face in the roof of the truck, on top of the coolers...So if people pack lightly, that thing can carry a few people.

lurker's picture

!

Marcil, you are wrong. There is more than twice as much space in Glenalth's van.

Riff Raff's picture

Hmmm, if a lot of people go,

Hmmm, if a lot of people go, it would make sense to have a trailer. The increase in people would likely overcome the extra cost in MPG. Do you have a trailer, and if so how big?

Glenalth's picture

Trailer

There is no trailer available here except a too-large and open horse trailer.

I'm thinking our sweet spot is going to be 8-9 people and pull one row of seats. I probably shouldn't bring all of my camp furniture if that's the case though.

Mihr's Best Friend

Riff Raff's picture

If a trailer is used then the

If a trailer is used then the sweet spot should be better. Does anyone else have a trailer that they'd be willing to have used on this excursion? If not, a 4'x 8' UHaul trailer for the event would cost less than 15$, split 8-9 ways would reduce the cost increase to about $1.50 or so. Which with more people would be negligible as the more people who go, the overall cost declines.

Riff Raff's picture

Golden Plains

Here's an idea, since Golden Plains is relatively close to PV, could you calculate what you think it would cost for PV to visit GP? If PV were to visit GP, GP would be more likely to attend HW.

Albuquerque - Amarillo = 287 mi
Albuquerque - Las Cruces = 222 mi

Glenalth's picture

Confused

I'm seeing $15 for 24 hours of trailer rental.

Hmmm, yeah, my bad. Cost for the trailer for a week would be about 100$. I guess that puts it out of the question then.

Glenalth's picture

GP

GP cost would be about the same as the HW/SF/ABQ loop.

Mihr's Best Friend

Riff Raff's picture

GP & HW

It appears that GP's next Coronation is two weeks before Spring War. If PV were to attend GP's Coronation and their Midreign then that would increase the chances of GP'ers returning the favor by coming to HW. But, would a Coronation and an IK event two weeks from one another be to much for people to make? Hmmm, PV's coronation is on the same day as GP's.

lurker's picture

!

We could not possibly get enough people to go to GP on our own coronation day. I would like to make a trip out there, but that is not the time to go.

There is time for a trip like that between Spring War and Rakis, but it's still sort of up in the air right now.

Glenalth's picture

Spring War

Spring War is just ending up to be too far for and too expensive. I still want to get somebody there for helping promote Harvest War, but the van isn't going to be the vehicle to do it.

In other news...

Battle of Savages = April 3-5 in Ruidoso

* 11 or 12 squished people = $6
* 10 squished people = $7
* 9 people = $8
* 8 people = $9
* 7 people = $10
* 6 people = $12
* 5 people = $14
* 4 people = $18

This looks a like a much better test voyage, less time in the car in case it ends up being really, really cramped, it's a 3 day event so we won't need as much gear, and it's considerably cheaper. I've committed the van to being there even if we don't fill it up too. We're also much more likely to get people from Ruidoso to Harvest War so that's a plus.

I'll post more once I know what event costs and such are.

Reminder to myself: Measure space under seats to see what will fit down there...

Me and Kyrie are planning on

Me and Kyrie are planning on going to Spring War. Does it matter if it's a PV'er promoting HW??

lurker's picture

!

If you would like to help promote the event, Riff Raff, then by all means, you are free to do so.

We can get you some fliers to handout before the event even :)

Riff Raff's picture

We might be attending PV

We might be attending PV Coronation at which time we can get some fliers. Though, we are trying to balance which we'd rather do, attend PV Coronation or GP Coronation. We'll probably do PV though, for a couple reasons. First, attending GP would be a bit of gas money to drop right before our trip to Spring War. Second, Tye-Dye might be in the area during PV Coronation, and we'd like to say "hi".
